In a classic online store, the catalogue, the cart and the pages customers see are one system. In a headless store, the storefront is a separate front-end that talks to the shop engine through an API.
What you gain
- Speed: a lightweight storefront loads faster, which directly lifts conversion.
- Freedom of design: landing pages, campaigns and custom product pages without template limits.
- One engine, many channels: the same catalogue feeds the website, a mobile app and marketplaces.
What it costs
Two systems mean more development and more to maintain. Features that come "for free" in a classic platform, such as previews or some plugins, have to be built or integrated.
Our rule of thumb
Start with a well-built classic store if you have up to a few thousand products and one sales channel. Consider headless when you sell across several channels, need a unique brand experience, or performance has become a bottleneck for growth.
